We are excited to announce the availability of a freshly reconditioned tugboat for hire anywhere on the Great Lakes, East Coast, and particularly their link, the Erie Canal.  For the better part of this last year, we have spent countless hours overhauling the tug from stem to stern and it is in top notch condition, has passed its USCG inspection and has a valid Certificate of Inspection. It is the tug CHEYENNE, which has always been well known in the New York area as a hard working “canaller”.  The tug is outfitted with retractable pilothouse and masts, allowing the crew to reduce its air draft in order to clear all the bridges and gates throughout the Erie Canal and River ways below Chicago.  Since the mid-1990s, the tug was professionally maintained by Feeney’s Shipyard at Kingston, NY and in 2014 was outfitted with all new fendering and updates to meet the Seaway / Welland Canal transit requirements.

Sincerely,
Heather Price

Prior to that, the tug was owned and operated by its builder, Ira S. Bushey & Sons, of Brooklyn, NY.  They took very good care of it during those years and it really shows to this day.  It spent most of its life hauling oil barges from the Coast, through the Canal, into the Lakes and scrap barges in the New England to New Jersey area.

The tug is now based out of Manitowoc and Sturgeon Bay, WI, and is owned by Captain Commodes Inc., a Wisconsin corporation which is state and federally registered as a woman-owned small business.  It may benefit you to speak to Nate or I regarding tax and other benefits in working with our business.

We are available for moving heavy or specialized cargos, single assist jobs in the smaller ports on Lake Michigan, emergency assist jobs anywhere on the Great Lakes, winter Ice Breaking, and general towing, 24/7, 365 days a year.  Although our main focus is the transit of cargo between the Great Lakes and East Coast, via the Erie Canal, we have access to various types of barges for marine contracting, hauling cargo, lightering, and are willing to work most anywhere, anytime.

Nate Price, and myself, have nearly 50 years combined of business experience and working in the maritime industry.  We have a variety of crew members on call, who are selected specifically for the task we are hired to do, so you receive the most professional service we can provide.

The CHEYENNE is one of only three remaining functioning “canallers” left in operation.  While it is rated at 1800-HP (at 720 RPM) and 2000-HP (at 865 RPM), it feels like it’s putting out a lot more, compared to the dozens of other tugs our crew has run in that HP range.  This tug loves to run hard and has tremendous power.  It is powered by a single 10-cylinder Fairbanks Morse opposed piston diesel, model 38D-8-1/8.  The Fairbanks Morse Company is based in Beloit, WI, and still produces this model engine today.
